Jacob Spach

Jacob Spach was born in Friedburg, North Carolina on April 1st 1768 to Adam Spach and Mary Elisabeth Spach. He moved to Salem in November of 1783.

He first worked under Brother Herbst in the tannery. He worked here for three years until a dispute with another in the tannery forced him out. Spach then trained as a carpenter after moving back to Friedburg. In 1815 he is recorded as building the frame for the new tavern boarding house in Salem with George Fischer. He is later recorded in the Friedburg diary as the contractor for the building materials and construction of the new Friedburg church.
