Autumn Saturday Workshop: Portrait Painting with an Historic Experience

Workshop Location: The Vierling Barn beside the Doctor's House , 463 Church Street

In this one-day workshop Leo Rucker, a local artist and the Manager of the St. Phillips Heritage Center at Old Salem, will guide attendees through a practical approach for drawing and painting portraits. He will show how to work with acrylics, oils, and ‘touch on’ pastels, as he works with a live model. He will demonstrate drawing portraits through observation of facial structure, features, and shadow pattern, and explain techniques for handling color, mixing flesh tones, and brushwork. Also, he will discuss how these techniques are relevant to early historical portrait paintings in the Old Salem Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) Portrait collection.  A guided tour to see selected portraits at MESDA will take place before lunch.  After lunch, you will return to the workshop space for ‘Paint Along’ with Leo in second session of the day. This class is geared toward sharpening ones drawing and painting skills, as well as having fun.
